Jeans 1970’s Cinema Photographs
2013
Upon exhibiting the ‘Picture Houses’ project at the MAC Birmingham, I was given a collection of slides by Jean Turley, who gifted them to me and permission to expose them to the public. The photographs were taken some time in the 1970’s and are virtual copy of many of the images and themes produced for ‘Picture Houses’, although some of the cinemas were then still operating in their final years as working cinemas.
I found the notion of similar artwork, photography and subject matter being produced in distant decades fascinating and how archives and collections are produced, passed-on, forgotten about or destroyed. In the case of the work in this project, mimicking the subject they are a document of.
The following images are the scans from the slides which Jean took of Birmingham’s functional, re-opened and partly demolished picture houses.
